Late-winter Hiking Highlights

Our family loves to hike! Trekking up into the mountains for a few hours of active family interaction is one of our favorite past times, so it's no surprise that we headed out early this year while the fresh mountain air was still very crisp.

This first hike was to Twin Falls (Snoqualmie area). I opted out since I was still in the I-feel-like-I'm-going-to-vomit-at-any-second stage, and kept little B home as well. Hiker chick grandma went along instead.

Twin Falls is definitely a family favorite because of the scenery and the fact that it is a fairly easy hike. If you're in pretty good shape and looking for a legitimate workout, you'll probably want to wear a full pack to toughen things up a bit. It's about three miles (round trip) to the actual bridge that overlooks the falls, but we usually continue on above the falls, making the total about 4-5 miles round trip. The trail is very popular, which could be a positive or a negative depending on your personal preference.

This next hike to Franklin Falls (also Snoqualmie) was a lot of fun for many reasons, the main one being that much of the trail was still covered with snow; very exciting considering we didn't get any around our home this year. It was also particularly memorable because it was our three-year-old's first official hike on his own two feet. Of course it was only about two miles round trip, but still, what a trooper! Really, they're all great troopers and I've been really impressed over the past couple of summers with how willing they are to keep on to the end even when they are exhausted. Good job guys!

One thing to keep in mind is that this trail is not very accessible until late in the winter/early spring/sometimes early summer depending on the amount of snowfall in the area. Also, the rocks close to the falls can get very slippery.
