We like Halloween at the Dueck household. Not so much that we take the time to do lots of decorations, or go all-out for costumes; in fact, our costumes are pretty much thrown together with what we can find around the house or at the thrift store. But we do look forward to dressing up and enjoying family traditions!
In preparation for the bizarre holiday, Kevin had a little fun with a photo app making some alternate-realty images;) ...
No way we were going to forget our annual family pumpkin carving night!!
This was my favorite pic from the evening. Definitely illustrates the sensation of sticking your nice clean appendage (although, "clean" may be stretching it in Joe's case) into gooey pumpkin innards.
Notice that Mae outmaneuvered this icky experience by gearing up with handy protective wear (no pun intended;).
Looks like James is going to avoid the cleaning-out process altogether by bashing the thing clean open.
Oh, fun times with siblings!!
And for the final product!!
At their spookiest ...
And then, of course, we all dressed up and attended our church group's annual Halloween carnival and trunk-or-treat. In case it's not obvious, we've got a couple of jailbirds, three Men in Black, a Power Ranger, and a deadly ninja guy.
Close up of the Men in Black gear. James came up with the gun design, and we had fun "building" all of it with some silver spray paint, a marker or two, a few pudding cups, a shipping tube, probably a full stick of hot glue, and a few other odds and ends.
Two of the MIB had a great time and gave a little service by running the donut bobbing station.
Kevin and his good buddy Doug supported the youngsters by frequenting said station. Nothing to do with the donuts I'm sure;).
Joseph and Brooks also had a great time hanging out with friends and visiting all the fun stations (Joseph morphed himself into a ninja turtle power ranger at the face painting booth). Porter used his slick math skills to guess the correct number of sour gummy worms.
Turns out we weren't the only ones with the jail bird idea--the Stuckis and Smith's were on-board with our criminal concept (Bahaha! Yes, that one was intended. I'm a total dork).
Brooks' good buddy Luke as none other than Luke Skywalker.
Mae with some of her amazing (and totally cute) friends.
And then was the actual trunk-or-treat part. Grandma Loo had just had hip surgery I think the week before, but was still brave (or naughty) enough to join in on some of the fun!
I think she was pretty worn out, though, and we took her straight home when it was over.
And then after all the excitement of the carnival, we headed out trick-or-treating (as it was actually Halloween Night). It ended up being a super rainy evening--as Joseph's runny face paint easily attests to--but we had a great time as always!!
Life really is so chaotic and just plain hard a lot of the time. Family fun and traditions are what help to make it all so amazing and worth it. Now I just need to remind myself of that when I'm stressed out by the traditions themselves (especially those involving camping:/!!).
